"I hate you!" From your teenage son. Part 2

The National Geographic magazine wrote an article called The Science of the Teenage Brian.

In one part of the article it writes about how teen boys bond and have fun. It states…

“At least one Friday a month, boys gathered after school in the backyard of Bryan Campbell (one of the boys) to wrestle and box. Campbell’s mother gave her OK as long as they kept it safe; a bloody nose was the worst injury suffered. The boys often used phones to film their contests, then posted the videos to a private group on Facebook, where more friends could admire their prowess. The rush of a headlock, a bond between friends – their fights delivered both excitement and social rewards”.

Allowing your son to wrestle or box, play sports or participate in any activity where he’ll be able to release pent up energy or stress are great ways for him to manage his anger. I think young men who play sports, or participate in some type of activity that allows them to vent their frustrations, anger, or any other emotion are less likely to go to get into trouble, become depressed or participate in a crime.

Also, a study from Tel Aviv University, by Keren Shahar, Ph.D., suggests sports participation can also improve a child’s cognitive, emotional and behavioral well-being every bit as much as his or her physical fitness.

The more we learn about the period of adolescence for teen boys, the more anger, aggression, or boxing with friends, seems more normal and important for male development.
