Rocky Hill Native Breaks BU Running Record

Matthews posts top time in the nation in the indoor 5000m run and qualifies for NCAA Tournament.

 

­Boston University senior and Rocky Hill native Katie Matthews posted the best time in the country for indoor 5000m while breaking a school record at the Terrier Invitational on Jan. 27.

Matthews posted a time of 15:52.80, which will qualify her for the NCAA Tournament.

It will be Matthews's third appearance in the NCAA Tournament and her second appearance in the indoor 5000m. In last year's tournament, she finished sixth. 

The Rocky Hill resident eclipsed the previous school record, held by Andrea Walkonen, by more than 10 seconds.

Matthews and the rest of the BU indoor track team will compete in the "Battle of Beantown" in Cambridge Ma. at 4 p.m. today. Boston University will compete against Northeastern, Harvard (who is the host) and MIT.
