Rock Cats Admit On-Field Marriage Proposal Was Fake

A YouTube video depicting a failed marriage proposal during a New Britain Rock Cats game last week was a marketing stunt, the minor league team admitted Wednesday.

In the video, which went viral and has garnered over 600,000 views since it was posted on Aug. 3, a man and woman are seen partaking in a trivia promotion between innings during the game at the Rock Cats stadium — which is partially located in Berlin.

Then, the man pops the question, "will you marry me?" At that point, the young woman seems shocked and, in a notably awkward exchange, then replies "no." She then runs off the field and the man runs another direction.

The whole thing was fake and was "a creative promotion 
designed to entertain fans," the New Britain team said in a news release.

Mike Abramson, vice president of marketing for the team, explains why they decided to do this:

"New Britain Rock Cats games feature fun, creative promotions tied into every game, and micro-promotions between most innings," Abramson said. “After watching a public proposal, we talked about what would happen if the answer were NO, and how that might affect a crowd, and those viewing it after on video. We worked with two of our staff on the skit and executed a digital strategy to set the video on a viral path; we could not be more pleased with the outcome”.

Abramson then went on to apologize if anyone was offended.

“If anyone was offended by the promotion in any way we sincerely apologize; this endeavor was intended to entertain and remind fans you never know what you’re going to see at a Rock Cats game."
