Stevens School Principal Leaves School and State For Retirement

John Colonghi had been an educator 35 years but will now live in Charelstown, RI.

John Colonghi is not only leaving Stevens School but he also leaving the state as he has retired as Principal of the school.

"It is hard to believe but here we are at the end of another school year but this past year has been a great one for all of us here at Stevens School," Colonghi said. "And why should it be any other way? Stevens School has great kids, excellent teachers and supportive parents. This is the perfect recipe for success."

Colonghi has been the Principal of Stevens Elementary School since February, 2009. His career in education began in Middletown where he was a classroom teacher for several years at both the elementary and middle school levels.

After he received his Master's degree in Reading/Language Arts, Mr. Colonghi became a Reading and Language Arts Consultant for the Middletown Public Schools. He held this position until leaving Middletown.

He came to Rocky Hill in 1996 as the Reading Consultant at West Hill School.  Three years later, he took the role of Vice Principal at GMS.

He lived in Middletown and Charlestown, RI with his wife Patricia.  He is the father of three children and four grandchildren.

"Serving as Principal of this great school for the past four and a half years has been the highlight of my 35 year career in education," he said. "I feel extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to lead this school and to work with such wonderful kids and teachers. I want to thank the community for your support over these years. I know that I leave Stevens School in good hands with Mr. Maziarz taking over on July 1. I’m quite sure he will keep me up to date with what is happening.

"I also want especially to thank the Stevens PTO for all that they have done and continue to do for our school, our students and our teachers. We have the most generous and hard working PTO that I have ever worked with. Special thanks to President Leona Adamczyk and Vice President Joe Leal for their dedication to helping make Stevens School the very best school in town."
