Stevens Fifth Graders Learn About the Civil War

Stevens Elementary School Prepares For End Of School Year

While the end of May finds the fifth grade with an eye on the future and pondering the pas, excitement is in the air as the students look forward to their visit to GMS.

They will get to tour their new school and learn what life will be like as middle school students.

May also brings the chance to travel back in time! On "Civil War Day," the students will learn about the life of Civil War soldiers through hands on activities related to bridge building, field medicine, artilery and the signal corps. This 'Rally 'Round the Flag' program by Roseland Cottage of Woodstock, CT truly brings history to life.

A language of the past will also come into focus this month as the fifth grade engages in a word study with our literacy coach featuring Latin.

From Stevens Elementary School Principal Colonghi, John, "With May comes the final stretch to the end of the year. The next few weeks will be full of activities such as field trips, spring assessments, and of course, the Stepping Up Ceremony for the fifth graders.

"Also, please remember that Friday, May 24 is a shortened day for students and May 29 is the Memorial Day holiday.

"I’d like to publically thank all of the people who have been involved in making this year’s Nature’s Classroom trip a huge success. First of all, thank you to Mr. Basroon for handling the organizational details. I’d also like to thank Ms. DeSimone for her hard work in putting together a week’s worth of special programs and activities for the students who did not attend Nature’s Class- room.

"Mr. Jay Chhabra participated as a chaperone and also drove the U-Haul that carried the luggage to and from Colebrook. I’d also like to thank Mr. Rob Degree and Mr. Wayne Postell for spending four days away from their homes to be with the kids. Also, Mr. Basroon, Ms. Pensiero, Ms. Robbins, Ms. Tavares and Ms. Montgomery worked as chaperones on the trip.

"Finally I’d like to thank the PTO for their generous donations to the program. Their financial support enabled several children to attend who otherwise would not have been able to participate.
