Stevens and West Hill Students Will Be Treated To New Gym Floors This Fall

Work is under way to replace both gym floors and it is scheduled to be done by Aug. 30.

When students of Stevens School and West Hill School return to school this fall, the physical education classes and assemblies will look completely different.

Both the gyms are being worked on and both gym floors are being replaced. Work began in mid-July and is scheduled to be done by Aug. 30.

West Hill School will also get new bleachers but those will not go in until after the floor is in place.

"While it may not be the best option to have the floor go first and the bleachers afterwards, it is the most prudent," Rocky Hill Town Manager Barbara Gilbert said at a recent Town Council meeting. "All those involved feel it would not be wise to put in the bleachers until the gym floor is done."

The Rocky Hill Town Council awarded of bid for the Stevens School Gymnasium Floor Project and West Hill Gymnasium Project to Kenvo Floor Company, Inc., 128 Ten Rod Road, Exeter, RI.

This gymnasium floor project will be charged to the Reserve for Capital and Nonrecurring Expenditure Fund - Repairs and Improvements to Schools – budget line 40-950-000-5735.

The Town went to bid for the gymnasium floor work at Stevens and West Hill Schools with a mandatory pre-bid walk-through and with a bid opening on July 10, 2013.

Six contractors (two from out of state) attended both the walk-through with three contractors submitting bids. Kenvo Floor Company was the lower bidder with a combine price for both gym floors of $117,740.

The architect from Friar Associates recommends that Kenvo Floor Company be awarded the Stevens gymnasium floor bid. The gymnasium floor project work will be performed with a scheduled completion date for August 30, 2013.

"I was there for the walk through and was impressed," Rocky Hill Mayor Tim Moriarty said. "When we get these projects done it will be a big boost for the kids. It is long overdue and has to be done. We have to continue to look at these capital projects and get them done."
