The American Cancer Society is the leader in the fight to end breast cancer. We are putting your dollars to work doing the most to help people with breast cancer today in every community and working tirelessly to find cures. American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive 5K walk that brings the community together to honor those with breast cancer, remember those we have lost, and create a world where no one has to face breast cancer. Making Strides raises awareness and funds to help fight for every birthday threatened by breast cancer in every community. In 2011, approximately 3,280 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in Connecticut alone. One of every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer turns to the Society for help and support.

Since 1993, 8 million American Cancer Society supporters across the country have raised more than $460 million through Making Strides events to help fight breast cancer. In 2011, dedicated supporters raised more than $60 million nationwide, $6 million of that right here in New England, where Making Strides began 20 years ago. The American Cancer Society invests more in research to find, prevent, treat and cure cancer than any other nongovernmental organization. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.

As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
