CREC Aerospace School to Launch in Rocky Hill Next Month

The magnet school will be run by the Capitol Region Education Council and will open on Brook Street.

A science-themed regional magnet school will be opening at 525 Brook St. in Rocky Hill next month.

The New Britain Herald reported that the Capitol Region Education Council's new school, the Academy of Aerospace & Engineering Elementary School, is scheduled to open on Aug. 28.

The first 200 students in the 2013-14 school year will be divided between three grades, ranging from age 3 to kindergarten, and the facility will add one grade each year, The Herald reported.

In April the Rocky Hill Planning and Zoning Commission authorized CREC to use a former Brook Street office building used by the Student Loan Foundation as the temporary home of the new school.

The school will be CREC's 19th regional magnet school and the first in Rocky Hill.

The school will initially open with 213 preschool and kindergarten students, with up to 66 students added each year, according to a CREC report.

CREC says the plan to invest between $2 million and $3 million to upgrade the building, which will remain on the town's tax rolls.
