Chemical Spill At Rocky Hill High School Forces Evacuation Of Summer Day Campers

Nobody hurt and school cleared by 1 p.m.

A chemical spill at Rocky Hill High School Tuesday morning forced Summerscape day campers to be evacuated to nearby Griswold Middle School before the building was cleared for use.

Rocky Hill Fire received a call at 7:25 a.m. and responded along with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP.)

"While custodians were moving furniture in the chemistry lab, an acid fell within one of the cabinets," Rocky Hill Fire Dept. Chief Mike Garrahy said. "The acid, called concentrated nitric acid, tipped over and fell inside the cabinet."

Rocky Hill fire and DEEP officials responded and mitigated the situation. The high school was ready and back open by 1 p.m.

Nobody was injured during the incident.
