McMahon: 'No Regrets' in Second Failed Campaign for Senate [UPDATE]

Democrat Chris Murphy, the 5th District representative, has defeated GOP hopeful Linda McMahon in the race for an open U.S. Senate seat

Update 10:20 p.m.

Saying it’s her own and her supporters’ job to hold responsible Connecticut’s delegation in Washington, D.C., Greenwich Republican Linda McMahon conceded the U.S. Senate race to Democrat Chris Murphy.

In the second concession speech she’s given in two years, the longtime WWE chief said she had no regrets about an often contentious campaign that drew a national spotlight.

“I don’t think we left a stone unturned,” McMahon told more than 250 supporter and media members gathered in the ballroom at the Stamford Hilton hotel. “I don’t think we would do anything differently in the campaign.”

Vying for the senate seat to be vacated by former Democrat Joe Lieberman, an Independent, McMahon and Murphy ran aggressive campaign ads and lobbed accusations of wrongdoing throughout the final weeks and days of the race.

McMahon said during her speech that she congratulated Murphy and reminded him that he’s accountable.

“I asked him to work hard for the people in our state,” McMahon said.

“It is our responsibility to charge them, to challenge them to make sure they hear what we say and to make sure they are doing what we need because they work for us,” she said to an appreciative crowd. “And if we let them forget that, then shame on us because we need to voice our concerns and we need to say what we need, and I’m looking forward to being helpful in that regard.”

In one light moment during her speech, McMahon—flanked by family and friends, including WWE pro wrestlers—thanked her husband Vince “who stood beside me and behind me all the way through this,” adding: “He’s very shy. He doesn’t want to come out.”

Update 9 p.m.

The Associated Press has called the contentious U.S. Senate race for the seat vacated by Joe Lieberman for Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Cheshire, over GOP candidate Linda McMahon, according to an article cited in the Connecticut Post.

Four-term incumbent Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with the Democratic Party, decided not to seek re-election in 2012. Lieberman sat as a Democrat until 2006, when he was defeated by Ned Lamont in the Democratic primary; he then ran as an independent in the general election and he won. He has since caucused with the Democrats as an "Independent Democrat."

Former Connecticut Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz and Murphy—a 5th District Congressman—competed for the Democratic nomination. McMahon, the 2010 Republican Senate nominee, and former Congressmen Chris Shays competed for the GOP nomination. Murphy and McMahon won their respective primaries on Aug. 14, and faced Libertarian Paul Passarelli.

"Tonight's victory by Chris shows that we have elections in Connecticut, not auctions,'' Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said in a statement.

Update 8 p.m.

The ballroom stage and podium (pictured) at the Stamford Hilton where Greenwich resident and longtime WWE CEO Linda McMahon will either claim or concede victory in a hotly contested U.S. Senate race is being swarmed by dozens of media members as the 8 p.m. poll-closing time approaches.

Arriving here at the headquarters just now are Douglas Eklund, an Oxford resident who is moving to Stamford, and Cathy Bertasso, a city resident.

Bertasso, 69, a registered Democrat and retired human resources professional, said she is supporting McMahon because the GOP candidate is a job creator.

“She is just a generous supporter and she’s a small business woman,” Bertasso told Patch. “She knows how to create jobs and I think she would be an asset. She’s not political. She doesn’t have to do this.”

Eklund, 70, a retired SNET technician and former member of the Oxford RTC, said McMaho could help turn around the economy.

“She could help around these events that have gotten us into a situation with enormous deficit and excessive spending,” Eklund said.

Update 4 p.m.

Four hours before polls close on one of Connecticut’s most widely anticipated races, supporters for the two major party candidates for retiring U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman’s seat say they’re eager and optimistic.

Mary Howard, a registered Republican from Stamford, broke away from the phones at her city’s GOP headquarters to say she sees in party candidate Linda McMahon—longtime CEO of the WWE, based just one mile away—many of the same qualities she sees in presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

“She is such a good businessperson and has created so many jobs here in Connecticut, which [Democrat Chris] Murphy has not done,” said Howard, a Manhasset, N.Y. native and former New Canaan resident who formerly worked as a flight attendant.

The McMahon-Murphy race has drawn a national spotlight as one of a handful in Congress where Democrats and Republicans have been neck-and-neck in much of the polling since primaries this summer. The race also has drawn attention and criticism for what’s been described as the personal, vitriolic nature of many campaign ads.

Murphy, a congressman in the Fifth District, received a vote today from 75-year-old Barbara Spitzer of Stamford, a native of the Chicago area and former Greenwich resident who volunteered with the city’s Democratic party during the campaign season.

For Spitzer, a psychologist, Murphy stands for women in important ways.

“I think he wants women to have choice and equal pay, and I think he stands for the environment and that’s so important, especially after this storm,” Spitzer.

Even as a separate storm approaches for Wednesday, the lingering effects of Hurricane Sandy could be felt in Stamford and elsewhere. Nearly 5,000 customers of Connecticut Light and Power, the state’s major utility, remained without power as of 3:30 p.m.—down from a high of more than 600,000 one week ago.

According to Stamford Democratic City Committee Chairman John Mallozzi, overall turnout in Stamford is projected to hit about 78 percent today—down from about 81 percent four years ago.

Meanwhile, McMahon cast her vote Tuesday afternoon at North Street School in Greenwich. Speaking to the media afterwards, McMahon said she felt she had gotten her message across to constituents.

“It was my intention from the beginning to let the people of Connecticut know that I had a plan to put them back to work, to jumpstart our economy and I think that message has been resonating loud and clear,” she said.

In a video released on YouTube Tuesday (attached), Murphy—who is casting his vote Tuesday afternoon in Cheshire—urged his supporters to cast their ballots.

“This election is going to be close so make sure you reserve enough time today to get out to the polls,” he said.

The libertarian candidate for the senate seat is Paul Passarelli of Norwalk.

On his campaign website, Passarrelli paints himself as a Washington outsider who will bring fresh perspective to the senate seat.

“It bears repeating, that I will go to Washington for the State of Connecticut, the Constitution of the Unites States, and the Republic that is the Unites States of America; not for the Democrats, not for the GOP, or even the Libertarians, the Objectivists, the Greens, etc… regardless of whether he earns their support or their vilification,” the campaign website says.

Original Story

For months, Senate hopefuls Linda McMahon and Chris Murphy have traded barbs over the airwaves and during several debates. Voters will soon decide which of the candidates will replace outgoing U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman.

The most recent poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling and released on Nov. 2, says that Murphy has a 52-43 advantage.

McMahon, former CEO of WWE and a 2010 candidate for U.S. Senate, has been running a self-funded campaign focused on the economy. Chris Murphy, a congressman in the Fifth District, has sought to differentiate himself from McMahon on women’s issues.

Paul Passarelli, of Norwalk, is running on the Libertarian ticket.

Sarah, I agree with you. Linda McMahon spent millions her own money. The real waste is when Barack Obama spends billions of taxpayer money on bad investments like Solyndra, corporate bailouts that go to CEO bonuses, and GSA extravagance. We should thank Linda McMahon and we should demand that the president and congress approve a budget before they approve any increase in government debt.

Linda please run again..50 million pump into the economy every few years is a big help. She can create jobs too, sign makers, media personal for commericals, and all those print companies:)

Linda, why didn't you kick Murphy in the groin like WWE?
Ben Rodriguez November 8, 2012 at 01:22 am
Great for CT and Chris Murphy. Linda, get it straight, people don't like you and you can't polish a turd, even at 100 million dollars.

I've been told she had a yacht... Named 'Sexy Bitch'. Would have made an interesting commercial with the 6 pm news and prime time.

Chris Murphy will be a great Senator and he will make us proud. Having said that, the CT-GOP made an enormous mistake by endorsing Linda McMahon as their candidate. This was a blind, thoughtless and cowardly kowtow to the Tea Party, the cynical politics of muckraking, and an insulting discredit of the intelligence of CT voters. Imagine for a moment what a Murphy-Shays contest would have looked like in comparison. The dialog and debate would have been about experience, vision, and policy, rather than lies, half-truths, and ad-hominem attacks. The campaign would not have been viewed across America as a disgusting caricature and a complete embarrassment. We could have gone to the polls knowing that, even if our chosen candidate lost, we could put our faith in the quality and integrity of the opponent. CT-GOP: you sold your souls in a desperate attempt to put up a W, and I can only hope that you learned something from this!
janet November 8, 2012 at 09:26 am
Business employs people, this state has a spending problem not a revenue problem. Corporations should be welcomed with open arms not punished!
janet November 8, 2012 at 09:29 am
I agree, we have fools running this state
Luckyguy November 8, 2012 at 09:47 am
This is one of many things totally wrong in Connecticut. A bankrupt state still requiring hard working taxpayers to fund the pensions of State Workers. It's a disgrace especially now that even the top performing private organizations do not have pensions.
Luckyguy November 8, 2012 at 09:55 am
There are many people who do NOT like Chris Murphy as well. He's is a total geek and pawn for the Democratic party. He has no leadership or business leadership skills and brings NOTHING to the table to advance our state. He's going to join the cronie line up with his poster boy Dicky B. I wish Murphy and Linda would both disappear.
Luckyguy November 8, 2012 at 09:59 am
Chris Murphy is going to be another career politician like Dicky B and when he does show up to vote he will vote 100% Democratic. He brings nothing to the table at all. Not a fan of Linda either but people in glass houses should not throw stones. Murphy had attack ads as well.If Chris Murphy is the best we've got we are in serious trouble.
Luckyguy November 8, 2012 at 10:05 am
I agree Ziggy. Obama has divided our country and it's not good. What's worse is that 50% of our country thinks he's doing a good job despite a losing resume. Obama would have fired in 4 months in the private sector. And he can't speek without his teleprompter.
Joe November 8, 2012 at 10:29 am
Lets blame Connecticut voters and not the fact that the candidate had no experience in government. Business experience is great in a lawmaker, but not a substitute for experience as a lawmaker. Such experience would also provide a legislative record as a window Linda's positions on issues. All we had was her telling us she's a moderate, and in a blue state that's not enough.
Joe November 8, 2012 at 10:33 am
Solyndra was a failure, but the US auto industry and countless alternative energy firms were not. We even have a new state senator whose business sells solar panels to businesses, who of course use tax incentives to buy them. The CEO bonuses were from the TARP program, created by President Bush, not Obama.
Chris Griffin November 8, 2012 at 01:37 pm
She must have only been half owner :)
Chris Griffin November 8, 2012 at 02:54 pm
Agreed, great point. Big mistake for CT GOP.
How much better would it have been to see two qualified people discuss experience and their own vision of what CT's future should be. Better also for CT also if the rest of the country saw this type of match-up instead of the nasty battle they did see. I think Chris Shays would have done better in debates and got more votes. The intriguing question is would McMahon still have won the primary even if the CT-GOP endorsed her?
Chris Griffin November 8, 2012 at 04:53 pm
There are a lot of people who do not like both for sure.
Looking at the election results and considering they were able to call it @ around 8:30 PM it is clear that a lot more disliked McMahon. Luckyguy will get half his wish. McMahaon is going away forever (thanks for pumping $100 Mil into the economy). The other half..I do not think so. Thanks to McMahon Murphy is one of the most well know poiliticians in the state now. He is going to be around a loooooooooooong time. Congrats to Congresman/Senator Elect Murphy.
Chris Griffin November 8, 2012 at 05:00 pm
I disagree. Senators are legislators and he is a lawyer by trade. He has experience in this area, will be a value add, and may even tasked with writing legislation. Isn't it some advantage to having a CT rep that is much more involved in the process..
If McMAhan won what would she have brought to the table? Conversely she would have simply voted 100% Republican. A first term senator at age 63 and no prior experience at all she would have brought much less to the table.
LB November 8, 2012 at 05:09 pm
Actually you can polish a turd, Mythbusters did it and they came out nearly gleaming. But even when it's shiny it's still a turd, like Linda.
LB November 8, 2012 at 05:20 pm
Short term temporary 'stimulation' of the economy isn't what we need. We need long term good paying j-o-b-s. The most Linda accomplished was to bash the public over the head with her wanton desire for power for 5 months...again. Buh-bye, Linney.

"our Socialist president can finish us off by completely stripping us of our Nuclear defense arsenal,"
hey luigi!.{the original}..your a bit late...there are currently over 21,000 u.s. corporations in china..and a good many of them are.."our defense manufactures...after all...they use a cheap labor force...its about profits..not patriotism!!"...they went there ...long ago...under george bush so..."your mis-informed....and guessing or lying...i'll let you decide which one you are...you should be embarassed enough now!!"
WINEGUY51 November 8, 2012 at 07:23 pm
"And he can't speek without his teleprompter".
....thats "speak'..and yes..many public speakers and performers..use them...of course..you would'nt need one..because who would want to hear your diatribes anyways?..
Sarah C November 8, 2012 at 07:38 pm
It's true that we need long-term jobs, but if I was hungry and someone offered me a hamburger, I wouldn't refuse it because I would rather have prime rib. Likewise, if I owned a storefront that was standing empty and someone offered to rent it for four months, I wouldn't be particular about their political persuasion.
Robert Averack November 15, 2012 at 01:16 pm
Chris, very good question re: McMahon's viability without the CT-GOP endorsement. There is no doubt in my mind that the RSCC and other CT-GOP party leaders could have kept McMahon off the November ballot if they wanted to. Given the traditionally-poor turnout of voters on primary days (typically in the low 20's), those who came to vote would have leaned toward the party-endorsed candidate. Unfortunately, the CT-GOP has become far too right-leaning to see the value of moderates like Chris Shays. Like the national GOP, the last thing they want is open debate and effective collaboration with the DEM's, and fiscally-conservative/socially-moderate men like Chris Shays have been silenced by the radical right. Unless the CT-GOP comes to see the error of their ways, they will continue to alienate themselves by selecting candidates who compel "anyone but [X]" votes. As a lifelong DEM, I place tremendous value on a viable two-party system an the synergistic power of debate it supports. It's time for us to get back to that, versus the game of political see-saw that has been so pervasive over the past 20 years. And finally - to Luckyguy: who would you have wanted to see on the ballot for U.S. Senate this year, and why?

Luckyguy November 15, 2012 at 07:04 pm
Robert A. I agree with and respect your comments above. However, in CT Chris Murphy and his sidekick DIcky B are "yes" men and there is not a two-party system anymore. To me, these lawyers turned politicians represent everything wrong with our political system. I would like to see a D or R who represents the "middle class" as a business owner with experience of hiring and running a business. Someone that is truly in touch with the "big picture" (ex. Economy, job creation).Chris Murphy and Dicky B would be fired (if they could find a job in the private sector) because they don't have ideas - they are check the box politicians and vote to get re-elected every term. I would vote for Senators and Reps who are innovative and make good sound decisions on what is BEST for our State. For Example, In these times is it right for State Taxpayer money to fund State Worker's pensions. NO WAY!!!! But the D's get these votes to keep this "entitlement" alive. If you owned a business right now and would you use your own money to fund your employees pension? Of course you wouldn't. Nobody does that anymore. You would use your own money to help your family and get through these difficult times. We need real people leading us, not career politiicians that are not "real" with the times.
Luigi (the original) November 15, 2012 at 08:24 pm
Yeah WINEGUY I'm embarrassed. Embarrassed for you being such a tool. Your arrogance is only exceeded by your liberal hyperbole.
This President is planning negotiations with the Russians that will lower our Nuclear arsenal. This President has raised the debt ceiling to record high levels, to fuel his massive spending frenzy and pander to the "entitled" for their vote (a plan worked for him). This President has increased the printing of US currency off the back of borrowing record amounts from the Chinese. So, you arrogant twit, am I mis-informed or lying?... you tell me.
Luckyguy November 15, 2012 at 10:39 pm
So life goes on in CT with a $365 million budget deficit yet the Democrats insist we pay for State Worker's pension. Really? Is that the right thing to do? It is if you are a Democrat and have the "special interest" groups (ex. state employees) best interest. If anybody on this patch thinks that's the right thing to do then you are 100% ignorant. It's time to END the state employees pension program. Try to talking to your Democratic politician about this and they will look like a deer in the headlights. Duhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
William Brighenti November 16, 2012 at 03:12 am
I love the authenticity of Linda's comment about her husband, Vince, being too shy to come out to the audience. LOL! Vince isn't too shy to unzip his pants to a kneeling half-naked woman on cable television and in front of a live audience, but he is too shy to stand beside his wife in front of a respectable audience. LOL! Too funny.
