Tight Town Budget Approved

No Salary Increases For All Town Employees

The 2011-2012 fiscal budget was approved by the town council on May 16 and it is being called a tight budget by the town manager and board of finance director.
The town budget is $60,090,177, which is $1,047,967 or an 1.8% increase over last year's budget. The mill rate has been set at 24.5 mills per $1,000 of assessed property value, which is an increase of 2.9%.
"This is a responsible budget that strives to maintain the services currently provided to our residents while being cognizant of their ability to pay," Barbara Gilbert wrote in her letter to the mayor and the town council.
Board of Finance Director John Mehr said that everything stayed flat in the budget with the only increases in petition contributions and health insurance. He said that the town will be watching the state capitol to if any state funding will be cut.
"We are in good shape, depending on what happens in Hartford," Mehr said.
All town employees and some board of education members agreed to not take a salary increase. The teachers union took their salary increases in the last year of their contract. Negotiations for the teachers' new contract is expected to begin this summer.
The budget went into effect on July 1.
