Workshop Informs on the Importance of 2010 Census

The Connecticut Conference of Municipalities presented a workshop called "The 2010 Census: Results are in - Now What?" to town officials from all over the state at the Rocky Hill town hall on June 21.

The workshop was led by Anna-Maria Graica, a senior partnership specialist for the U.S. Census, who told the packed audience how important the census is because of the government dollars that can come to municipalities as a result of the data.

"The number of people that live in a community drive federal funding for grants," Garica said. She added that the census helps to determine redistricting and congressional appointment as well.

She told the crowd of town officials that the census determines the number of people who live in a community and what type of households they live in.

She stressed that while the census is fresh in everyone's mind right now, they need to remember it in 2019 when the next census gets underway for 2020. She said people should fill out the American Community Survey if they receive it.

"It is the meat and potatoes data," Garica said of the survey. The surveys, she added, are sent every month and ask questions about social, economic and housing data.

The workshop had been previously scheduled for January, but was canceled twice due to snow.
