Same Day Voter Registration Makes Its Debut In This Years November Elections

Rocky Hill Democratic Registrar not looking forward to possible problems.

For the first time in Rocky Hill municipal elections, Rocky Hill and the rest of the state of Connecticut will allow same say voter registration.

In May of 2012 the Connecticut Senate approved the bill and it was signed into law.

Most U.S. states require voters to register before an election with various deadlines (such as 30 days or 15 days before an election). Election Day voter registration allows eligible citizens to register on election day, by showing valid identification to a poll worker, who checks the identification, consults the registration list, and, if they are not registered, registers them on the spot.

"It could be a nightmare," Janet W. Viggiano, Democratic Registrar told the Democratic Town Committee at the Democratic caucus. "We will be forced to check the ID and if there is a question, it could lead to lines. We also might have to call surrounding towns, like Wethersfield to see if they have voted there before we allow them to vote. We're not looking forward to it so it would be great if people who are going to vote could register before the actual day of the election."

The registrar's office is open Monday and Wednesday from 2:30 to 4:30 pm and Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. until noon. Its summer hours, until Aug. 27 will be Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to noon.
