Rocky Hill Attorney, Mother Of Three Will Run For Town Council As Independent

No Independent has won election on Town Council in at least 15 years.

Lisa Marotta has always been an Independent and an independent thinker and she said it has served her well.

Marotta, a Rocky Hill attorney and mother of three, says she will run for a spot on the Town Council this November as an Independent.

"I think it's time for a new perspective on the Town Council," said Marotta who is a Special Prosecutor for the State's Attorney Office and is moving her law private practice to Glastonbury Ave. in town. "I have a family with school-aged children and I think those views are underrepresented on the Council. There needs to be more balance there."

Marotta said she is especially worried about school security and infrastructure, lack of space and capacity and all of the school facilities.

"After the tragedy at Sandy Hook it is obviously important to think through how we can make our schools safer," said Marotta, Vice President of the Rocky Hill Education Foundation. "I have three children in Rocky Hill schools and volunteer in all of their schools so I have a good idea what is needed."

Marotta said she does not like the fact that Rocky Hill is only offering a full-day kindergarten program as a pilot program.

"We should be offering full-day kindergarten to all of the students eligible in Rocky Hill," said the Middletown native who went to Quinnipiac for undergrad and Law School there as well. "I worry that we won't and don't have the facilities to be able to offer kindergarten to all of our students."

Marotta is married to Sal Marotta and has three children, Alexa, 13, Matthew, 9 and Nicholas, 5.

She has heard from people that no Rocky Hill resident has run for Town Council as an Independent in over 15 years. She knows she will have challenges running without being on an endorsed slate of candidates.

"If I ran under one of the political parties I feel there might be potential for political pressure," she said. "I think the people of Rocky Hill are ready for an independent voice and view. As an Independent I will be free to express my opinions.

"When I meet people whether it be in the schools or seniors, they are all looking for a change. I'm optimistic and hoping that the voters will look beyond party lines and see what I bring to the table."

Marotta said her platform calls for the following prongs:

  • Increased Government Transparency
  • Proactive Approach to Education
  • Support for Local Businesses
  • Sustainable Town Initiatives
  • Land Preservation
  • Farm to School Programs
  • Prudent Long Range Budgeting

"Regardless of the problems that Rocky Hill has or has gotten itself into, it doesn't matter how or why because we have to be part of the solution," Marotta added.
