PZC to Discuss Town Center West Project Tonight

The commission will not vote on the project application, but members of the public are invited to speak about the proposal.

A proposed 142,000-square-foot project at the southeast corner of West Street and Cromwell Avenue will be the focus of discussion during a public hearing at a special meeting of the Planning and Zoning Commission tonight.

Applicant Richard W. Vicino is proposing to build a shopping center similar to Blue Back Square in West Hartford or Evergreen Walk in South Windsor. The plans include a 4,500-square-foot bank, a 6,500-square-foot restaurant and two other retail buildings with one being more than 15,000 square feet and another more than 10,000 square feet.

The hearing on the Town Center West project will be at 6:30 p.m. inside the Council Chambers at the . The night will start with a presentation by the developer on his request for a special permit to build the development and for site plan approval to be followed by public comment.

The commission is expected to discuss the public's comments and details about the project, but members do not expect to take formal action on the application at the meeting.

The project is currently in front of the Open Space and Conservation Commission. the site in late April to get a better understanding of the area and the project itself. A second public hearing will be held on May 9 at 6 p.m., with members possibly taking action that night.

The Planning and Zoning Commission cannot take action on the application until the Open Space and Conservation Commission renders its decision.

There have been several proposals for the site over the years, including for a hotel, but no formal plans were ever presented to the town, Rocky Hill Engineering Technician Robert Alvarado said. Connecticut Light and Power currently owns the site. In June 2011, the from office park to commercial.
