Poll: Should Arts Organizations Have to Compete for State Funding

Arts organizations across the state were surprised last week to find that Gov. Dannel P. Malloy had dropped their earmarked funding from his budget, preferring to have them compete for a pool of funding instead.

After an outcry, the governor's office restored the funding to 80 percent for this year, but indicated that arts organizations would be on a path to competition for funding in future years.

Among the organizations that faced the initial cuts were the Connecticut Humanities Council, the New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas, the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford, the Mystic Aquarium, the Palace Theatre in Waterbury, and the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, according to The Hartford Courant.
