Local Schools Taking Part in Kids' Summer Lunch Progam

The initiative seeks to feed kids who might otherwise go hungry this summer.

Whoever said there's no such thing as a free lunch? In Connecticut this summer, the old adage is being proved wrong. You can get a free lunch — and breakfast — for your kids.

In an effort to address childhood hunger in Connecticut at the local level, New Britain is joining dozens of other communities in taking part in the state's free summer lunch program for kids 18 and under.

Under the initiative the city is feeding children at numerous locations. The program aims to help feed kids whose only breakfast and lunch during the rest of the year are the meals they get for free at school.

The meals are being provided, through Aug. 24, at 535 sites across the state, many in schools with summer educational programs as part of them, according to a Hartford Courant report.
