Glastonbury-Rocky Hill Ferry May Receive $300,000 State Bond

The State Bond Commission meets at 10:30 a.m. today in Hartford.

The state may be investing in the future of the Glastonbury-Rocky Hill Ferry, even as the Department of Transportation seeks to double fares to passengers.

The State Bond Commission is considering a $300,000 grant for a new ferry office building. The bond would complement $788,724 in federal funding received last year, according to a release from State Senator Stephen T. Cassano.

The funding will help build a "New England"-style house on the west side of Meadow Lane, which will include office space, a repair workshop and an ADA-compliant restroom.

The Federal Highway Administration grant will also help renovate the parking lot at Ferry Park.

"The public is going to see a return on the investment that they're making in the slightly increased fares that are necessary to preserve this historic ferry," Cassano wrote.

The DoT is seeking to increase ferry automobile fares from $3 to $6, and pedestrian and bicycle fares from $1 to $2.

The 357-year-old Glastonbury-Rocky Hill Ferry is the longest continuously operating ferry in the country.
