DOT Commissioner Redeker Urges Ferry Groups To Get Into Schools

He says that poster contest, adding ferry history to curriculum might help market ferries with ridership.

When Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner
James P. Redeker was asked how the public could help market or defray costs for the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury or Hadlyme ferries, he talked about his dilemma.

"So we can publicize the ferries a little more," he said. "What can we do as a team or individuals? That is a harder question. When we had a group of you it was great because it was the first addition of staff I've ever had in my department. I can't tell you to do anything because you are volunteers.

"We have heard ideas about having art shows or charging a fee to rent out the landing spots on each side of the ferry landing. I would struggle with that. I would have to come up with a rate and it would be subject to regulation. If you raised money and decided to donate it to the ferries or the DOT, I'm not sure I could take it. There are rules about that and it would not be a simple transaction. Sixty percent of awareness has proven to be word of mouth so I would urge you to talk it up around town and anywhere you go."
Redeker said he has two summer interns who will be tasked with contacting all involved Chambers of Commerce and get them on board to market and promote the ferries.

"My favorite idea is to get into the schools," he said. "Why can't we get into the schools in all of these communities and have a poster contest or a marketing contest. Shouldn't these ferries be part of the curriculum in all of these neighboring schools. I am a little upset that mass transit and local history is not included in many school's activities. Maybe we can have a badge for boy scouts and girl scouts where they learn about and do some activities at the ferries. I wish I could do more but I'm trying to re-build a railroad."
