Council Will Discuss 'Adjusted Budget' At Meeting Tonight

Both parties would like to see the budget decreased significantly.

During the both parties suggested major cuts to the budget. The Democrats have recommended cuts totaling “roughly $620,000” with $400,000 of it coming on the town side of the budget. Some of proposed cuts by the Democrats:

  • Eliminating an unmarked police cruiser
  • Eliminating risk manager position
  • One less brochure being sent out by the Park and Recreation Department
  • Eliminating a part-time records clerk at the 

They also suggested adding $50,000 to the $50,000 already budgeted for the eventual replacement of the turf .

The Republicans are asking the budget be cut by about half a mill or approximately $1 million. The minority party agreed with several of the suggestions by the Democrats and made the following additional recommendations:

Town Manager Barbara Gilbert met with her department heads last week to discuss "the series of recommendations by both parties" to the proposed budget. She will present her "adjusted budget" at the workshop tonight.

The council has several options. It can adopt the new budget without making any changes or can make individual motions to add or delete items from the budget.

The budget must be adopted by May 21.
