Connecticut Budget Crisis Could 'Devastate' Towns

Town leaders at a meeting this week said they're worried the deepening budget problems, which include a growing deficit that is expected to balloon to more than $1 billion next year, will mean cuts in town aid.

Town leaders are beginning to fret about Connecticut's budget problems, raising concerns that the deficit - now projected to balloon to more than $1 billion next year - could mean cuts in town aid that the state makes each year to Connecticut's 169 towns.

In a meeting Thursday of the Housatonic Valley Council of towns, municipal leaders learned that the measures being considered by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to balance the budget could bring steep cuts in state municipal aid, according to the News Times of Danbury.

Most towns in Connecticut each get tens of millions in education and road funds from the state each year and town leaders for years have complained that cutbacks in that aid have already strained local budgets and have forced higher local property taxes. Any additional cuts would be devastating to local communities and could result in layoffs in local school systems, the News Times quoted local leaders as saying.

I have zero sympathy for the people of any municipality that was carried by Malloy in the 2010 election. You got what you wanted, now deal with it.

I totally agree, unfortunately all of us have to feel the effects. It is clearly obvious that on the state and federal level, spending must be cut, drastically. If any politician is not stating that, you can't take them seriously. Why would anyone vote for them, mostly, but not all, democrats.

True story. When i was leaving the polls after voting i heard a girl asking her mother who the politician standing outside the building was and her mother told her he was vicino. The girl said oh he is the one i just voted for. She voted for the guy and she didnt know who he even was. You want to know why people vote democrat i will tell you. Democrats vote for whoever is running as a democrat like loyal little puppets and they dont even know who the hell they are or what they even stand for. I know that because i used to be a loyal democrat puppet every bit as much as that girl was until i looked at what they were actually doing and i woke up and saw i was being played like a fiddle. So if that girl is reading this dont feel like everything looks bleak if your mother winds up being laid off because of the crushing budget cuts malloy is about to pass to make up for the democrats spending spree. Hey a least the royal bank of scotland in greenwich got a hundred million dollars in free money and tax breaks from the democrats you voted for.

OK! Now the **** has finally hit the fan. Now it'stime to face the Union and state employee problem. Malloy gave the unions what they wanted as Quid Pro Quo for their support. We should revisit the agreements and change them as much as possible. We also need to eliminate the twice a year bonus the state employees get just for showing up. We also need to eliminate overtime pay inclusion in retirement benefit calculations. If you think any of this will happen I have some very valuable swamp land for sale at a discounted price.

Ex Democrat hit the state problems squarely on the head. It really is a sad commentary on many of the voters
