Children Discover the Bear Necessities of Life

Young children learn the differences and similarities between people and bears.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection held an event called "Are You Me?" Tuesday afternoon at the . The purpose of the program was to show children, ages four to eight, the differences and similarities between animals, plants and people.

"So, they can start to understand different ecosystems and why it is important to protect them," Rebecca Gelernter of DEEP said. For example, she explained that Black Bears have short claws so that they can dig where Grizzly Bears have long claws so they can catch fish.

Following the presentation, the children worked alongside DEEP employees and librarians to make their own bear mask.
