Both Parties Agree to No Lawn Signs

Large four-by-four signs will be placed at 'highly traveled' areas in town.

Both the Republican and Democratic parties are going green after agreeing to eliminate political lawn signs for the November election.

The agreement was announced this week in a joint statement by Democratic Town Committee Chairwoman Carol deBear and Republican Town Committee Chairman Dimple Desai. and endorsed the decision.

"These signs tend to add clutter to residential neighborhoods and serve as distractions to motorists traveling along busy thoroughfares," deBear and Desai said in a joint statement. "In addition, many of them are vandalized or turned into soggy eyesores by the first good rain and windstorm that comes along. Eventually, most end up in landfills that are already overloaded with residential and commercial trash."

However, the parties have agreed to allow no more than a dozen four-by-four signs per party at "heavily traveled locations" in Rocky Hill. The signs will list all the party's candidates to help voters familiarize themselves with who is running.

"These signs are clearly easier to read by the motoring public and stand up much better to storms that are common to New England at this time of year," deBear and Desai said in a joint statement. "We hope that our efforts to make this year's campaign more environmentally friendly will encourage an increased percentage of voters to take the time to go to the polls."
