Police Increasing DUI Patrols Ahead of July 4 Holiday Weekend

Local police near Rocky Hill will be cracking down on drunk drivers.

If you're driving through Newington this weekend here's a quick head's up: don't drive drunk.

In an effort to deter motorists from driving while under the influence of alcohol and or drugs, the Newington Police Department will be conducting roving DUI patrols during the Fourth of July Holiday weekend.

Newington police will have more officers and patrol cars out from July 5 through July 7. The Berlin Turnpike, which is one of the more traveled roads that extends from Newington into Berlin and is often traveled by Rocky Hill drivers, will likely be one of areas with a higher police presence.

"Each year thousands of lives are lost, many more are injured as a result of alcohol related accidents," police said in a news release. "The Newington Police Department hopes that its efforts will provide safer traveling and greater awareness of the results of driving under the influence and help reduce the loss of lives and injuries by removing intoxicated drivers from the roads."

Funding for these patrols was made possible by a grant awarded from the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
