Eleven-Year Veteran Promoted to Police Sergeant

The Rocky Hill Police Department held promotion ceremony for Steve Morgan on Monday morning.

 

Steve Morgan was promoted to the rank of police sergeant during a promotion ceremony Monday morning at the .

Morgan joined the in 2001. He is a member of the honor guard, a certified field-training officer and a Dare and Skills for Life instructor.

"He is very coveted by the kids for his work with that program," said Police Chief Michael Custer about Morgan's work with the Dare program. Morgan is also a member of the CREST regional scuba team.

Morgan, who has received several awards and medals, was born and raised in Newington and graduated from Newington High School. He is currently working on his bachelor's degree from Central Connecticut State University.

"He has had a fine career and we are looking forward to many years more," Custer exclaimed. "I think he is ready to take the next step."

The 11-year veteran is happy to be carrying on a family tradition. Morgan's father, Jack, is a retired Newington police sergeant and his brother, Michael, is currently a lieutenant in Newington.

"I feel fantastic," Morgan exclaimed. "It really feels great."

The department has just completed "" with the final one being Morgan's, Town Manager Barbara Gilbert said. The department now has six sergeants after the number of detectives was changed, she added.

"We are moving our department forward," Gilbert stated.

Rocky Hill, Berlin and Newington police officers as well as town staff and officials attended the promotion ceremony.

There are currently 34 officers in the police department, which is one short of the number allotted for the department. Gilbert said the department is expected to fill the position in the near future, which will cut down on overtime.
