Calling it an “extreme, perverted behavior” a Superior Court Judge sentenced Mark Powell, 52, to 3 1/2 years in prison for sexually assaulting a nearly unconscious Hamden woman in the back of an ambulance, the New Haven Register reports.

Powell, a former American Medical Response paramedic, was arrested Jan. 5, 2012 for the attack that occurred the morning of Dec. 25, 2011, when police say he sexually molesting a patient in the back of an ambulance, according to a prior Patch story.

At Powell’s sentencing Superior Court Judge Patrick J. Clifford called Powell’s behavior “extreme and perverted.” The victim, who was 22 at the time of the assault, read a statement saying Powell’s actions will stay with her every day for the rest of her life, the Register reports.

The woman had been injured earlier at a Christmas party and when she was being transported to the hospital, Powell pinched the woman's breast and manipulated her vagina with his finger in an attempt to wake her up, according to police. The woman woke up during the assault, police said, but was unable to speak or move because she was strapped to a stretcher.

Powell later admitted doing the acts, according to police.

State’s Attorney Kevin Doyle called it the “ultimate betrayal by a professional in a position of trust,” the Register reports.

Powell will register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
