Resident: Passing Referendum Puts People Against Education on Notice

The June 4 referendum on high school renovation project is "only the beginning of change in the positive direction," Leal said.

The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by resident Joseph Leal:

Friends,

I'm sure that by now you have heard that the , which will most likely result in the loss of teaching staff, tutors/math coaches.

It is a sad day that the Town Council can say something along the lines of "Hey, let's agree that we need to fix our schools, but let's not give the kids the instructors they need to be properly educated."

Our town desperately needs some new faces on the town council. I was at last night's meeting as were some of you. They looked like a bunch of lost puppies, not knowing what proper procedure was at times, and despite approximately 10-12 speakers including children speaking out in support of the teachers and Board of Education, they were ruthless. With the exception of one town council member (Mr. DeBear, who has been extremely supportive of all BOE matters), you can feel the tension in the council chambers. The fact that they could sit there, listen to all these pleas and yet vote it down was very disheartening to say the least. At least one council member was noticed dozing off during the procedures.

I ask that you forward this message to your friends, family and colleagues that live in Rocky Hill. We have all chosen this town for various reasons. I’m sure one of the top reasons was the school system. That system needs our help right now. Town Council would rather spend money elsewhere like the , , ADA improvements to buildings that don't see any foot action, carpets, lighting, painting etc. But continue to ignore the real needs of our schools.

However, there is lots of good that can come out of this. June 5th is the first step.

you can send a message that is very loud and very clear to the Town Council. By voting Yes and making this referendum pass, you will put those that do not support the schools on notice. They will know that the people are listening and that the people know what's going on, It would send a ripple thru town council, You will hear councilors back track on there stances. Furthermore, this town is aching for new faces on that that Town Council. Enough of these back door deals, secret handshakes. We know what truly runs this town...Awesome parents, kids, schools and small businesses

June 5th is only the beginning of change in the positive direction. But it will only happen if we show up to vote.

Please...Do your part...show up at the polls...take your kids with you...take 5 minutes to explain how important this issue is and how it can directly affect them in the future.

This message was not paid for by anybody. This message is a heartfelt plea to help restore order to this town.
