Patch's Poll: Do You Use Your Vacation Days?

About 57% of working Americans had unused vacation time at the end of 2011 — does that sound familiar? Take our poll and add your thoughts in the comments.

We are coming up on Memorial Day weekend, which is the unofficial start to summer. Summer is the time when most folks plan and take their vacations from work. But a recent study shows that many American workers don't use most of their allotted time off.

"About 57% of working Americans had unused vacation time at the end of 2011, and most of them left an average of 11 days on the table — or nearly 70 percent of their allotted time off, according to a study performed by Harris Interactive for JetBlue."

Among reasons workers gave for forgoing vacation were:

  • Felt they could not take the time
  • Could not afford to travel
  • Were worried about taking time off in an unstable job market.

How about you? Do you get paid vacation? Do you use it? Why or why not?

We have gotten better about taking time off. But we are also self employes...which means even when we aren't in the office we are still working!

I get six weeks paid (work for a European company, that is the norm). I can't possibly take them all, and they don't pay for unused. So, good and bad. Ultimately, I guess I take the same two weeks as everybody.

Every day for me is vacation. I think most people in CT use them up going on interviews for jobs they don't get because they are trying to get a better job because their current job leaves them living paycheck to paycheck.

I get 4 weeks per year as is standard at my company. I typically take 2 to 3 weeks off per year - I would like to take more but it is difficult getting away from the office with the demands of my job.

I use most of my 3 weeks vacation because my spouse and I both work full-time so we have to use some of our vacation time to cover days that out kids are off from school. I also try to roll over a few every year incase one of these years we'll be able to take our family of 5 on a vacation vs. a staycation.
