Health & Fitness

Reflections

Core Power reflects on 2011 and changes directions in 2012.

As I reminisce about this past year, I am feeling grateful that I have the opportunity to do what I absolutely love to do, teach. I am so fortunate to meet like-minded people who let me get up on my pedestal and chat about health and fitness. I truly enjoy connecting to people and witnessing their transformation to a healthier world and lifestyle.

I am still in awe of several older ladies who quite frankly were not in bad shape before they walked into my functional strength classes. Well, they did it, they got stronger, they pushed themselves, they found encouragement in a class setting and now have worked their way (proudly) to full blown push up’s, planks, side planks and even yoga!  Yes, you read right. You see, one thing I’ve learned, when it comes to physical fitness, age is irrelevant. Time and time again, I witness this over and over and I believe if you want to make a change, you will find a way and to do it, no excuses. These ladies came with determination and made their health a priority, no excuses.

I’ve seen people walk into class with what I call fire in their eyes, wanting to be in better shape, wanting to improve their eating habits, wanting to reduce their glucose/cholesterol levels and want to reduce their risk for osteoporosis. Well, you know what, they do! Proof is in their numbers on a variety of tests that help to prove that yes, exercise and proper nutrition (not a diet) work. How about it! Once again, I am blown away by so many people this year who have made the commitment to live a healthier lifestyle!

Who wouldn’t love this “job?" I know I am in the right place, as you just can’t put a price tag on this rewarding and fulfilling “job.”

Since I am reflecting here, over the past few years, I’ve been so focused on finding Core Power a permanent home, something that resembles a window front retail space. Many times I’ve been so absorbed in that, that I have not given attention to other things that are important to me. Actually, now as I reflect, not having a window front retail space has played in my favor, as I am not bogged down by the worry of paying a hefty monthly rent. This has afforded me the opportunity to take a look at other passions I want to fulfill in 2012.

Core Power will focus 2012 on two specific initiatives near and dear to my heart.  I will be working towards a Cancer Exercise Trainer Certification (there are only 6 in the State of CT) and a Bariatric/Non-Bariatric Yoga Program. I will be able to train those who have been diagnosed with cancer and have not begun treatment and/or are receiving treatment. Cancer drugs have so many debilitating side effects that this program will help those improve their quality of life.

Core Power in conjunction with Sacred Rivers Yoga in Glastonbury will be rolling out a doctor approved groundbreaking yoga program specific to those who have gone through gastric bypass and those who choose not to. I am a firm believer that yoga should be accessible to everyone, no matter of shape or size. The health benefits alone from yoga are phenomenal, no one should go without. This is a very exciting program, with the main focus on a variety of meditation methods, since we need to train those that the mind and body are connected, once that happens, change occurs. Details on this exciting program will be available shortly (look for an upcoming blog on the Patch to announce program details!).

A special thanks to all of my classes, yoga and non-yoga for allowing me to share my passion with you! You continue to inspire me! “Real life real world, grand finales, changing things up, want til you see the next one, and don’t go anywhere” would not be the same without you!

Wishing you a warm, happy and healthy holiday season!
