College Bound

College already? Where did the summer go?

Straying away from my Fitness Blog this week. Blogging about being a mother, which I know so many of you can relate to.  Like you, I love being a mother, a job that never ends, just shifts as the winds change year to year. This summer, my mother role was more than a friend than a mother, I like where this is heading.

Just reflecting as I sit at my computer, recovering from the sweltering college move (only the 2nd floor this time!). My son Bryan returned to college today (Sat.  Aug. 11th) for football camp.  An early schedule of football games is to blame for this earlier than normal departure than the previous years. I have no hard feelings (OK, maybe a smidge), just would have liked one more week with him!  Though, now the third year of college, drop-off is much less emotionally dramatic than the first two years.

One less load of wash, one less at the dinner table and one less RH Patch MacDonald Blogger. Bryan's returned to college with enthusiasm to live the college life, play football and reconnect to all his buddies! I can understand, not a bad life at all! Gotta enjoy it while you can!

The house already has a different feel, though it does take a few days to settle into a new type of norm. I have been very fortunate to have spent lots of quality time with my son this summer.

As you know, we share the health and fitness connection. Many times meeting at our home gym and sharing a new exercise or routine. Bryan did set me up with a new challenging shoulder routine called The Hundred, tried it out the other day. He also set me up on Youtube with a new Tricep Killer Workout using a bar and blocks to vary the range of motion.  OK, so you think you don't use your triceps, I couldn't use mine the next day!  I think he forgets how old I am sometimes, but he knows I enjoy a challenge!  We are never at a loss for conversation.  Talking about the many inspiring people who we meet in life, whether at the gym, in a class, at college and their journey to health and fitness. While just the two of us home last week, we enjoyed a fabulous meal at the Asian Bristro. Trying a few different types of food that I probably wouldn't have tried.

It is really remarkable on how children mature year after year upon returning home from college. Where did the days of carseats, little league and sleepless nights go to? Funny, when you are going through sleepless nights, you never think you'll sleep again! Sometimes I think of going back in time to recapture all those precious moments, appreciate them just a bit more and hang onto them! My son Bryan has always been active, he use to climb out of the carseat many times while I was driving (hence the grey hair) I knew then I was in for trouble!

Amazing how kids eventually turn into responsible adults, OK, so maybe not quite totally. This summer Bryan coached a Passing League for Rocky Hill Football and helped to coach the Blue/While Spring Football Game. So responsible, but can't remember to pick up his clothes off the floor, bring dishes to the sink and get gas for the car!

Over the next few weeks many college kids will be returning, cherish all the moments you have before they are off and running again. It doesn't matter how old they are, they are still our kids and they always will be, we appreciate them, we love them and we support them!

Missing you already Bryan, I thnk I will go and give that shoulder workout another try!

A loving mother,

Lynn MacDonald
