Speed Reader to Throw Out First Pitch

Rocky Hill resident wins summer reading program and will throw out the first pitch at New Britain Rock Cats game.

Trevor Christensen will throw out the first pitch at the New Britain Rock Cats game Thursday after winning the (RBIS).

“I am going to be excited,” Christensen said about throwing out the first pitch. He added that he is "not really nervous" and hoping some of his friends, who he has not seen all summer, will be at the game to cheer him on. 

RBIS, which was established 13 years ago, is designed to inspire children, ages five through 12, to read during their summer vacation. Over 134 libraries throughout the state are participating in the program, which is sponsored by the New Britain Rock Cats, Connecticut Library Consortium and Central Connecticut State University.

A random drawing was held at the and Christensen received two free passes to Rock Cats versus Altoona Curve on Aug. 11.  He also got the chance to throw out the first pitch.

Eight and a half year old Christensen really enjoys reading and is a speed reader, according to mom, Karen. And it is a good thing because he had to read 15 books to complete the RBIS.  His favorite book from the RBIS reading list was Diary of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.

Thursday will not be the Christensen family’s first trip to New Britain Stadium. Trevor said that he has seen three Rock Cat games this summer and years ago, he ran the bases with his church group.

“We just had one (game) last week,” Christensen, whose his favorite player is Derek Jeter, said.
