After years of dealing with the rising and falling water levels of the Connecticut River, Nursick said it is the DOT's best guess that the ferry will be closed between 48 and 72 hours.

When the water levels are too high, cars cannot board the Hollister III barge safely, Nursick said. He added that the Rocky Hill Ferry is "much more prone" to flooding, due to its location along the Connecticut River.

"The river is prone to greater vacillations mid-state (Rocky Hill-Glastonbury area) than the Chester area," Nursick said. He added the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry has a different setup than the Rocky Hill one.

The Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry is the longest continuously operating ferry in the United States.
