Fire Causes Power Outage

Town Hall and the Cora J. Belden Library lost power, but were able to provide services to residents during the incident.

 

A transformer fire is believed to be the cause of a power outage at the and the Wednesday afternoon. 

The Rocky Hill Police Department is currently searching for the blown transformer, Town Manager Barbara Gilbert said.

The used a generator for the rest of the day and was able to conduct normal business. The police station never lost power during the incident, Gilbert said.

As of 3:30 p.m., 90 percent of the power had been restored to the . The library lost Internet access, but still had WIFI capabilities. Most of the lights were back on and the computers were inspected.

"As long as we have power, we will remain open for normal business hours," said Library Director Mary Hogan. The library is open until 8 p.m.

According to the Connecticut Light and Power website, there were 285 customers or two percent of the town without power as of 3 p.m. CL&P crews were in the area accessing the problem.

A branch was also down on a wire near the intersection of Old Main and Church streets. Line crews responded to the problem.

Meanwhile, a section of Main Street all the way to Hillside Avenue was without power, due to the heavy winds from Tuesday night's storm, Gilbert stated.

Metropolitan District Commission crews also responded to a water main break on Cronin Drive, Gilbert said. The residents in the area had water, but there was no sprinkler system at .

"We got a fire watch up there," Gilbert added. However, the break was expected to be fixed by 4 p.m.
