DOT Hiring Two More Ferry Employees

By adding two staffers, the ferry could eventually realize its goal of running seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

 

The Department of Transportation has received permission to re-establish and fill the two vacant positions on the , according to an email from Transportation Maritime Manager Chuck Beck.

Beck did not know when the hiring process would start.

Once qualified, the staff would be allowed to work a full schedule, which would be Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. and 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, according to Beck.

In August, the grassroots organization called was established to improve the operations of both Connecticut ferries.

One of the main goals of the Friends of the CT River Ferries was to have the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry operating from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days per week. To do that the DOT had to hire two more employees for a full staff.

The Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry currently has three full-time employees and if a staffer needs time off for any reason, there is not enough staff to keep it running, the DOT has previously stated. This lack of staffing caused the ferry to be closed several times last year.
