There's no better way to kick off the holiday season than by taking the entire family to see Warner Theater's "Fiddler on the Roof." Children will love the colorful characters--Tevye, the father of five daughters living in a small village and forced to deal with numerous societal and familial changes; his wife, Golda, who knows nothing from marrying for romances but when Tevye sings, "Do you love me?" she realizes in a poignant duet that "after 25 years," she does; and, of course, Golde, the 'matchmaker,' a loud, forceful personality who has the power to join compatible couples together..or not.

There are wonderful songs and  dances --especially the celebration where men dance with bottles on their heads--that will captivate children. This show is, in fact, one of the ways to introduce young people to live theater. There are a few scenes that could be frightening for younger elementary children but I believe these could be used as teachable moments. Parents can talk to their children ahead of time about racism and prejudice. The violence and pograms happened so long ago but adults know there are many situations in today's world where prejudice continues to thrive. What better way to initiate a simple, age-appropriate history lesson about bullies that were evident both then and now?

"Fiddler on the Roof" will be staged at the Warner Theater from Saturday, Nov. 2 to Sunday, Nov. 10. For more information, call the Warner Theater at 860-489-7180.
