Connect with your kids @ your library: World Book Day & Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

This is a big week for readers (and those who love them)! Thursday, March 1 is World Book Day and Friday, March 2 is the 108th birthday of Dr. Seuss, as well as the opening of the latest movie based on his work The Lorax.

World Book Day was designated by UNESCO (an agency of the United Nations) as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading.

Not many libraries in the United States celebrate World Book Day but that might be because we are all preparing for our own national pep rally of reading: Dr. Seuss’ birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day. Across the United States, more than 45 million people are expected to take part in the celebration. The mission: make reading fun. Really fun.  Locally, both Stevens and West Hill Schools have plans including hosting “Read Ins” and having older children read to the younger children.  For the preschool set, the library will be celebrating Dr. Seuss' books with stories and a craft on Friday morning.

You might ask “Why all the fuss about reading?” Well for one, kids who read for fun do better in school and better on standardized tests, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the nation’s report card.  With so many entertainment choices at their fingertips, kids don’t always think to open a book. The point of Read Across America is to urge them to consider it. And show them how it can be fun.

So how should you celebrate World Book Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday? Make a promise to read with your kids and make it a regular activity.  No kids around but still wanting to celebrate – try reading two of my favorites: Dr. Seuss’ You're Only Old Once! or Oh, the Places You'll Go!
