P&Z Agrees To Appoint Sub-Committee To Address Business Signage

P&Z and EDC Hope to be able to help small businesses.

The Rocky Hill Planning & Zoning meeting last week was dominated by a lengthy presentation and question and answer period about the proposed Foundry project.

After that public hearing was closed, the P&Z said it would be willing to work with local business owners and review the zoning restrictions on signage at individual businesses.

P&Z agreed to appoint a subcommittee to work with area business owners on reviewing and updating the signage regulations. Henry Vasel and the P & Z Chairman, Alan Mordhorst, will be working with the owners. Interestingly, Vasel has announced he is running for Mayor and Mordhorst is running for Town Council.

"Town Economic Development and Planning & Building Directors appear to be on board, at least in concept, as is the EDC Chairman, who I believe will be looking to appoint a liaison to our group," said Scott Coleman, who has formed a group called BusinessNow to advocate for small business owners. "I am cautiously optimistic that we will get something accomplished here, maybe even something great. Ray Carpentino, the EDC Director, has actually done  something similar in his former role in other communities."

BusinessNow hopes to meet Monday, July 8. The meeting will cover a signage plan, Fall (back to school and holiday) Rocky Hill Sales Days and business website. Those invited will include: EDC Director and Commission Chair, Planning & Zoning Director & subcommittee, local signs shops and Ad/Marketing agencies willing to contribute pro-bono work for the community.

"Whether the businesses actually need everything we’re doing or not, it will help not just ourselves, but all small business in Rocky Hill, and the community as well," Coleman said. "Some of our efforts may even reach further."
