Cora Belden Library Opens its Doors to Families Saturday

The First Annual Take Your Child to the Library Day will show the public all the programs that the media center has to offer.

The Cora J. Belden Library will host the on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

According to Children's Librarian Catherine Potter, the event was started by Waterford Librarian Nadine Lipman after she noticed that a bookshop was having a bring your child to the bookstore day. She thought to herself why isn’t their a similar event for the library.

Lipman started the conversation with other Connecticut librarians and it was decided that the second week of February would be the unofficial date for the event.

More than 100 libraries across Connecticut are participating in the event along with media centers in other states and in Canada. Each library in the state is celebrating the event differently, Potter said.

“Each one has made it their own,” she said.

At the Cora J. Belden Library, the event will feature the following activities:

  • Playgroup from 10:30 a.m. to noon
  • All Day Drop-in Craft to make a bookmark
  • Design a Library Bookmark Contest
  • Raffles of Picture and Nutmeg books and Free Baby Bundles
  • Screening of the "Smurfs" at 2 p.m.

Potter does not know what the turnout out for the event will be, but last week’s Science Saturday brought 40 people to the library.

“We are planning for a lot of people,” Potter said.

With it being a statewide event, Potter is hoping that people will visit other area libraries.

“We are hoping people library hop,” she said.
