Rita's and Kiwi Spoon of Rocky Hill Loving The Hot Weather

Swimming group lucky enough to have fundraiser at Rita's Monday night.

Rocky Hill offers a few choices to cool off and residents and people from far and wide took advantage of them Monday.

Rita's was packed Monday night and that was a good thing for the Laurel East Hartford YMCA (LEHY) Swimming Club which was holding a fundraiser at the store that offers Italian ice and much more on the Silas Deane Highway.

"My sister started this fundraiser and I decided to just try to keep it going," Kaitlyn Thomeson of Cromwell said. "We are a swim team that swims out of the East Hartford YMCA but we have swimmers from all over the state. We have people from Glastonbury, Wethersfield and Rocky Hill."

Alyssa Miano and Angelica Tafis are the two swimmers in LEHY from Rocky Hill.

Rita's offers groups 10 percent of all sales for a certain period of time. Monday night, the fundraiser ran from 6 to 9 p.m.

"The hot weather definitely helped the group as traffic was steady most of the time and jam packed most of the time.

"You would think we planned this weather, what a perfect night," Thomeson said. "One year we had this fundraiser and it was 60 degrees and there was nobody here. This year has been really good."

The Guilmette family from Portland came to Rita's from Portland because Portland doesn't have a Rita's.

Over at Kiwi Spoon on Cromwell Avenue, business was brisk as well.

"Mondays are funny because they are usually hit or miss," said employee Sarah, who did not want to give her last name. "But tonight, it was been pretty busy. The heat can be good and bad because people might want frozen yogurt but they might not want to leave their air conditioning."
