Local Girl Who Suffers From Rare Malady Starts To Raise Money For Walk

On September 22, the Wahnon and Ferrebee families will be walking to raise money, awareness and research for a rare disorder, Chiari Malformation.

"This is very personal to my family as many of you know my daughter Torah suffers everyday with it," said Jen Wahnon. "Ultimately the goal of this research is to increase scientific understanding of these disorders and to find ways to prevent, treat, and, ultimately, cure them. Chiari Malformation is structural defects in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance, speech, and vision. It is a very rare condition which has been profiled on TV's "Extreme Makeover."

Even though the walk is not until September, the families are raising money from now until then and donations can be made online here.

Conquer Chiari Walk Across America is an annual fundraising and awareness event comprised of a series of local walks held on the same day. On September 22nd, 2012 the event was held at 53 different locations, involved more than 8,500 participants, and raised over $530,000.

The 2013 walk will be on September 21st. We have walked for 3 years now and will continue. Last year our family alone raised over $1,000.00. Our personal website for donations is: https://www.conquerchiari.org/ccwaa13/torahwahnonferrebee

"Torah has already had  brain surgery  and is limited to most physical activities due to poor balance, vision, and fear of trauma to her neck and head,"" Jen Wahnon said. "Her speech has also been impaired, but nothing can weaken that delicious smile and personality of hers!  If you would like to make a donation, please refer to Torah’s donation pagePlease donate as much or a little to this great cause. Feel free to forward to your friends as well."
