Happy 100th Birthday To The Lodge Resident Alice Lawler

She says doing the best you can and doing what's best for your family are the keys to a long healthy life.

Alice Lawler celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday, July 22 at The Lodge, located at 50 Cold Spring Road in Rocky Hill.

Hey keys to life are simple but she says they still stand up today.

"Do the best you can and do what's best for you and your family," Lawler said. "I tell everyone I'm the meanest one around here but it's funny because I'm still very happy."

Lawler is a fixture at all of the activities at The Lodge. She insists on leading an active and independent lifestyle, and is a frequent participant in the retirement community’s musical events and activities.

"I love to sing," she said. "I'll sing pretty much anything they are singing. I'll join right in. After all this time I know most of the songs."

Lawler has led a wonderful life. After raising three children, she went back to work in sales. She sold beauty products but found her success in sewing machines. She won two trips to Europe going to Spain and then Sweden from her sales.

The children mostly remember what a fabulous pie baker she was and still hunger for those wonderful desserts.

Her son Bob, 57, was able to be at the birthday party. Lawler, who sported a tiara on her head throughout the party, was given a proclamation from Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman at the birthday party, which featured a Hawaiian theme.

"I was born in 1913 and a lot of things have changed in that time," Lawler said. "I think it is important to go to bed at 9:30 so when you wake up you have enough strength for the whole next day. I was a healthy eater. When I go to the diner they don't believe that I'm 100-years old. They check my ID to make sure I'm telling the truth."
