Developers Show Vision For Former Foundry Home

Town officials and Rocky Hill Riverfront Preservation Society as well as residents attend informational meeting.

More than 30 people attended an informational meeting at the location that was formerly a foundry near the Connecticut River.

There was a presentation to tell where Tulisano Park will be and marks on the ground where buildings would pop up when construction begins.

"I'm cautiously optimistic but the devil is in the details," said Ed Chiucarello, founder of the Rocky Hill Riverfront Preservation Society. "The developer's attorney was there and seemed to have dealt with the issues we had in the past."

On hand at the meeting were Mayor Timothy Moriarty, former Mayor Tony LaRosa and Town Manager Barbara Gilbert.

Among the issues that are important to Chiucarello and the Society are:

  • Public access to the Connecticut River
  • A walkway along the river
  • A public sidewalk
  • A linear trail connecting Tulisano Park and Bulkeley Park
"We want to make sure that the public access to the river does not change," Chiucarello said. "We look forward to seeing what the walkway or public sidewalk will look like. Also, in the original Parks and Recreation master plan there was consideration of connecting a river trail between this spot and Bulkeley Park. It's not a huge trail but it would be a great"

This project has stalled several times over several different issues. Chiucarello pointed to the problems with density, the connection to the river, that the buildings are as compatible as possible to the surrounding structures and the flooding problems.

"Those were all problems in the past but it sounds like the developers have dealt with these things," Chiucarello said.
