Elks Lodge Sells Chili Dogs for Charity

While Elks Lodge members were enjoying the Travelers Championship on television and ice cold beer, Dan Chamberlain was in the kitchen cooking up magic inside a hotdog bun.

For the past 15 years, Chamberlain has been cooking his chili and cheese hotdogs for Elks Lodge members right around the Traveler's Championship. All the money raised from the hotdog sales will be given to the Elks national charities.

"It's all volunteer work. That's what I do," Chamberlain, who works in telecommunication, said. The Rocky Hill/Wethersfield Elks Lodge sold about 100 chili dogs for $1.50 each.

Chamberlain's chili dogs are famous and are best eaten with the works, which is chili, melted cheese, raw onions and sauerkraut. But, there is no secrets when it comes to Chamberlain's signature recipe.

"It is so simple," Chamberlain said. "Restaurants should do it."

Chamberlain loves cooking chili dogs so much that he would love to do it for a living some day.

"The ultimate retirement would be having a hotdog cart in Rocky Hill," Chamberlain said. And maybe some he will get it.
