Flynn, a former mayor here who also served on the council and chaired the public safety committee, said she was honored by the recognition and thanked the audience, those she formerly served with, members of the public who voted for her and even those who did not.

“We live in a free country where you can vote for whomever you want.

“I have enjoyed serving the town of Rocky Hill and helping people out when I could. It’s been my privilege and I thank you for voting for me and even if you didn’t vote me.”

A lifelong Democrat and Hartford native, Flynn is the mother of two and grandmother of five. She was the commissioner of Bradley International Airport for 18 years, commissioner of the Hartford Civic Center for 10 years and served as the town marshal for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2007. The town even proclaimed March 17, 2007, "Mary Ellen Flynn Day."

At 78 years old, Flynn decided to step down from the Town Council and her life of volunteering to  spend more time with her husband and relax.

“I’ll be a little bored, but I’ll find something to do.”
